The more we retire from our national issues, the more our neighbors become audacious

On Sunday afternoon, October 28, 2018, the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands held a celebratory concert at the Amphitheatre of the Chronically Suffering People’s Foundation “The Platytera”, in order to honor the national anniversary of the 1940 Fight, with the work of the great music composer Mikis Theodorakis “Axion Esti”, of our great Nobelist poet, Odysseas Elitis.

The Choir of Saint Matthew sung under the direction of the musician Mr. Periklis Papadopoulos.

In his greeting, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, having congratulated Mr. Papadopoulos, the musicians and the Choir for their great attribution of “Axion Esti”, underlined that these chants offer national exhilaration and patriotic pride. Greek valiance and sacrifice will always give the necessary answer to anyone coveting the territorial integrity of our land. The ones who covet our homeland, become more and more with the passing of time. This is a natural result. The more we retire from our national issues, the more our neighbors become audacious and ask for more.

In his closing, Mr. Nektarios referred to the cold-blood murdering by the Albanian special forces, of our expatriate from North Epirus, Konstantinos Katsifas, on the day of our national anniversary of 28th October. His “crime” was that he raised the Greek flag in Vouliarates village of North Epirus, honoring the ones who died in the 1940 Fight. His sacrifice will always remind us that our nation is soaked with blood of its heroes.
