THE METROPOLITAN OF CORFU IN THE PARISH OF SAINT SPYRIDON IN CHICAGO

On Wednesday, the 11th of October 2017, his Eminence Metropolitan of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands Nektarios visited the parish of Saint Spyridon in Palos Heights of Chicago on the celebration of 100 years since its establishment. The Metropolitan of Corfu carried along the holy part of Saint spyridon’s right hand which is kept apart from His relic in Corfu.

The relic was officially welcomed in the presence of lots of people, while Metropolitan Nektarios expressed his profound emotion because Saint Spyridon, as their spiritual Father, invited people in America to find the meaning of life from the relationship with God. Through simplicity, love , deep faith, the Saint gives the opportunity to the people who are afflicted with the modern ideologies and the individualistic way of life, to see what it means to have a real relationship with Christ, to hope, to fulfil the existential needs and to expect salvation.

Metropolitan Nektarios stressed that the Orthodox Church is the basis of the Greek unification abroad, the care of unity and preservation of Greek identity, in the times of confusion and globalization, where money seems to be the central and sometimes unique concern of people.

He congratulated the head priest of the parish, father Tilemachos Alikakos and the community council of the Church for their work as well as their love for Saint Spyridon, while thanking them for the invitation and hospitality. He celebrated the Vesper and then a holy vigil took place in the church.

On Wednesday morning, his Eminence visited the Archdiocese of chicago and had a meeting with the auxilliary Bishop of Mokissos Dimitrios, who is also the Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Chicago.

The visit continues.
