The Falling Asleep of St. John the Evangelist and Theologian in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018 the Matin and the Divine Liturgy were made in the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Karousades village of Corfu.

In his speech, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios referred to the personality of St. John the Evangelist and Theologian, whose Falling Asleep is celebrated today.

Saint John was the beloved Disciple of our Lord, the one who “leaning back against Jesus” and followed his Teacher until Cavalry/ Golgotha with Virgin Mary. When the rest of the Disciples, fearing the Jewish had disappeared, John stood still under the Cross.

Moreover, St. John wrote with the Holy Spirit, the Gospel which brings his name and is the one with the most theological messages. He also wrote Letters and the prophetic book of the Revelation in Patmos island. The Evangelist John was named Theologian, because he found the Divine Word, the Second Face of the Holy Trinity.

The Word became flesh, the most amazing part of the Gospel. The Son of God is incarnated because of love in order to set His creature free from sin and death. St. John the Theologian reveals to us who the God is, the Creator of the whole world and the reason of our existence. St. John fell asleep very old in Ephesus of Asia Minor. After three days, his body was transferred to the sky.

In his closing, his Eminence asked the loyal Christians to live a life according to Christ, fighting on a daily basis against their passions and sins, in order to become participants of the Holy Grace.

By the end of the Divine Liturgy, Mr. Nektarios went to the camping site of the local Church in Kassiopi, where he was informed about the progress of the constructional works taking place there. It should be noted that the Holy Metropolis builds new buildings and other auxiliary places, because the first and foremost preoccupation of his Eminence is the new generation.
