To mark the 189th anniversary of the assassination of the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias of Corfu, a memorial service was held on the morning of Monday, September 28, 2020 at the Holy Monastery of Platytera in Corfu, where the tomb of Kapodistrias is located. The memorial service was held by His Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands Mr. Nektarios, while they were present.

Among others, the deputies of Corfu, Messrs. Stefanos Gikas, Alexandros Avlonitis and Dimitris Biagkis, the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands Mr. Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou, the Mayor of Central Corfu Mr. Meropi Hydraiou, the President of the Municipal Council Mr. Dimitris Makrionis and the University of Dimitrios Metallintas Perithontas Perithas. Director of Education of the Ionian Islands Mr. Petros Angelopoulos, head of a delegation from schools in the city with their flags. On behalf of the educational community, the deputy director of the 2nd Lyceum, Mrs. Dora Kouri, spoke about the governor.

Addressing the attendees and students, the Metropolitan of Corfu stressed, among other things, the following:

“We honor the memory of Ioannis Kapodistrias because we want to remind that death does not defeat the man, who in his life learned to fight for the whole and not to be left alone. At a time when our country is going through many and serious dangers we need unity and knowledge of the situation and the Governor was the one who knew the world scene, knew the potential of Greece and at the same time took advantage of all the opportunities that came from competition of the great powers of the time to lead Greece from autonomy that would include tax subjugation to the Sultan to independence, showing us that nothing is impossible when one who is the leader of a society knows and works selflessly and employs all his mental and physical strength for good.

We honor Ioannis Kapodistrias because he died poorer than when he came to power, as he relinquished any wages and spent his fortune on then-ruined Greece, showing us that love becomes a sacrifice in the age of individualism, indifference to values and fear. death. Figures like Ioannis Kapodistrias show us the way to make new beginnings “.
