“For Education in the Post-Modern Age”.

Like every year this time of the year, the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands, honoring the faces of the teachers of the island, held a special event on Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2019 at 19:00 at the Spiritual Center.

On the occasion of the memory of the Three Hierarchs, the event had its theme: “For Education in the Post-Modern Age”. The speaker was Mr. Nikos Papadimitriou, Professor at the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Foreign Languages of the Ionian University.

In the greeting of the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios addressed the contribution of the Three Confessors of Our Holy Church, who not only studied the theology of our Church, but also experienced the Mystery of the Birth of Our Lord in the Hearts them. The Theology of the Three Hierarchs is not a mere theoretical formulation of the doctrines of our Faith, but a living, experiential relationship with Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, today we see a war against our Orthodox Faith and the history of our country. But our people have been nursing for many centuries in the womb of Orthodoxy and love for their homeland. Therefore, it is not meant education out of faith and apathy.

In conclusion, Mr. Nektarios wished the Three Hierarchs to enlighten to all of us, especially today where evil is dominated, spiritual confusion and apostasy.

The event was co-ordinated by Protopresbyter Themistocles Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, who made a reference to the Feast of the Three Hierarchs, which was established on the Byzantine Empire and specifically in the times of Alexios Komnenos. The Ionian Academy, the first university in Greece, in 1826 officially restored the celebration and of course in the years of the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias, during which the holiday did not have the meaning of the absence of the pupils from their classes but it meant in the memory of the Three Hierarchs, the explanation of both the Apostolic and the Evangelical Readings of the Day, and then the lessons continued until noon so that the children would have this sense of meeting just the Church j culture. The modern Greek state, with its liberation, officially rejoined the celebration. Unfortunately, today the abolition of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs on the side of the state, on the pretext of a holiday, in fact generates very great reflections on what we want as a society from the Letters.

In his speech, Mr. Papadimitriou pointed out that in today’s reality there is a question, how do we see the time. Nowadays “stuck” to virtual reality, excessive use of mobile phones, running and obligations, bigger and smaller, we do not get to see ourselves and not just that. Because there is a complete challenge to the past, the identity and the collective memory, elements that are valuable to man to know who he is, where he is, where he is going, and what hope he has, this fact creates a real confusion. The post-modern reality is totally atomic, in which the so-called big narratives are “dead” and that means that man has no supports. Of course, man tries through intelligence, intelligence and performances, because these are the positive elements, to stand on his feet, but that does not mean that he can easily find meaning.

The professor also stressed that education needs to work in the perspective of creative doubt, otherwise helping educators to judge what is happening in the world, not to rest on not only the level of knowledge but also the level of cultural experience. There needs to be a reflection of ourselves both by the teachers and the pupils, so we have to take a stand against what is being said. On the other hand, religion today cannot function in the perspective of yesterday, that is, ideology, but hope. Christianity is hope. Through this hope of faith, there is a road that is a journey that will not end in the present life.

In the dialogue that followed, Mr. Papadimitriou stressed that the current education system needs seriousness – not seriousness – and humor to be able to reach out to students and of course to enable them through a climate of relationship within the classroom to be able to develop all their capabilities. Of course, there are many elements of crisis in the university education, which need some kind of assessment and improvement of the quality of the education provided.

The event was opened with hymns from the three-hierarchical sequence of the Three Hierarchs, a choir of the Choir of the School of Ecclesiastical Music “Saint Arsenios” under the direction of father Nektarios Bokos.

After the end of the event, there was a dinner for the guests.
