Celebrating the miracle “Sky’s Judgement” of Saint Spyridon

On Monday morning, November 12, 2018 at the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker, the Matin and the Divine Liturgy were made on the occasion of remembering the miracle of Saint Spyridon “Sky’s Judgement” on the 12th of November 1718.

In his preaching, Protopresbyter father Evangelos Koutras underlined that today, November 12th, Corfu, the island of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker, glorifies and praises the Triune God that with Saint’s embassies, did another miracle protecting the Orthodox people from the spiritual disease of fallacy to the truth. The illness of selfishness and disobedience to the will of the Lord.

The wish of the Venetian ruler in Corfu, Andreas Pizani, was to build an altar next to the Holy Tomb, in order for the Latin function to be performed, as a deed of gratitude to the saint who saved the island from the Ottomans in 1716. Saint Spyridon warned him again and again that he should not build this altar. Influenced by a Latin theologian, Pizani began the work of creating the Latin altar. On the evening of 11th November 1718, terrible events took place in the city of Corfu resulting in the death of Andreas Pizani, from the explosion of the city’s Warehouse. This miracle is reported by Eugene Voulgaris and St. Athanasius the Parius.

In conclusion, Father Evangelos stressed that the Saint teaches us not to pay attention to the opinions of people who do not possess the truth. To keep the faith that has defeated the world. The faith in which he imbued the world with the knowledge of the Triune God.
