Celebrating Saint Prokopios in the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

On Sunday, July 8, 2018, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in the celebrating church of Saint Prokopios in the village with the same name, in the middle part of Corfu.

This Reading part is connected with the one celebrated today by our Holy CHurch, Saint Prokopios the Great Martyr. He was called “Neanias” in the beginning and he was an officer of the roman army in Alexandreia of Egypt.

Once he was given the order to attack against the Christians. However, on his way, just like with Saint Paul, our Lord appeared to Him with the Holy Cross and asked him why he was coming after Him. Immediately. “Neanias” repented and received the name Prokopios by Christ. His faith and love for Jesus Christ were so deep and powerful in his heart so nothing could change them, even though they made him suffer a lot. He confessed with boldness the Triune God and denied making a sacrifice to the idols. This fact resulted in his giving his spirit to Christ by beheading.
The Bishop of Corfu underlined also that our era is similar to the one of Saint Prokopios living. Today, also, the ones in power fight Christ and impose to society any kind of distortion and abnormality the human mind can think of, while at the same time aiming at the self- promotion and self-admiration (new-idolatry).

Orthodox Greece has reached a point of “baptising” as pride the moral decline and conditions against nature. The mystery of lawlessness is already taking place at our homeland and aims at destroying the greek family, the basis that kept our Nation alive throughout the centuries.
In his closing, Mr. Nektarios asked the faithful to brace themselves with bravery and resistance against temptation and sin, through the prayers of Saint Prokopios the Great Martyr.
