Celebrating Saint Nektarios in Corfu

On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, the feast of the miraculous Archbishop Nektarios of Pentapolis, after whom his Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, was celebrated in Corfu.

In the Metropolitan Church of Virgin Mary the Spilaiotisa, in Corfu, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was performed on the morning.

The divine word was preached by Father Nikolaos Monastiriotis, Hierarchical Commissioner of the town, who stood at the urging of the apostle Paul from the apostolic reading of the day, to redeem time, that is, not to let time pass unused spiritually. Our model for this may be Saint Nektarios, who did not leave his trials and sorrows untapped, but used them appropriately to sanctify and attract the grace of God. Especially in our day, because “the days are evil”, we must seize the opportunities presented to us and progress against God. The speaker concluded by expressing the joy of all because on this day celebrates the Metropolitan of Corfu and spiritual father of all, who is vigilant for our spiritual progress and salvation and wished Mr. Nektarios to rest clergy and people with his ethos and paternal love, but also his associates and the people to rest him in return for the joy of progress.

At the end of the divine service, the Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios, stressed that the saint proves that hope did not disappear, although there was a lot of sin in our times, but grace prevailed. Holiness is a sign of this grace and the saint mediates for all. Mr. Nektarios referred with emotion to his own acquaintance with the saint, when he claimed to study at the Rizareio school, where the saint served as principal for most of the years and left his spiritual legacy, and always keeps in his heart the patience that the saint showed the humility, the ascent to Golgotha of trials. Mr. Nektarios reiterated that he is a prisoner of the love of the people and that despite the difficulties that the reshuffles bring to our country in the times, the people of God will continue their struggle to be re-evangelized. He thanked his associates, clergy and laity, and the people of God, asking them all to continue their fellowship and love.

Among those present were the Mayor of Central Corfu Mr. Meropi Hydraiou, the Mayor of North Corfu Mr. George Machimaris, the President of the Municipal Council of Central Corfu Mr. Dimitris Metallinos, the Regional Director of Education Mr. Petros Angelopoulos and others.
