BISHOP OF CORFU, MR. NEKTARIOS: “THE HOLY LENT IS A TIME OF SOBRIETY”

On the morning of Wednesday, March 17, 2021, His Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, performed the first Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of Lent at the Holy Church of St. Spyridon. In his sermon, Mr. Nektarios stressed that the period we are going through is a time of self-reflection, a time of spiritual practice, as in the spiritual stage we are in we are called to fight against our old self, against our passions, we are called to uproot our passions. so that they do not coexist and do not coexist with us. This is the purpose and the struggle of the holy and great Lent. To observe ourselves, our flaws, our falls, our sins and to strive to purify ourselves. To get rid of the attachment to our ego, asking God’s will to serve our passions. To place ourselves in the hands of God and let Him lead us to redemption and salvation. “Cast your care on the Lord and he will feed you,” says the psalmist. “If the Lord does not guard the world, in vain.” We humans today invest in the vanity of our false omnipotence and not in faith. That’s time to dump her and move on.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Mr. Nektarios performed the annual memorial service for the rest of the soul of the blessed predecessor of the Bishop of Corfu and Paxos, the venerable late Timotheos, on the completion of 19 years since his death.

Then, he went to the Foundation for the Chronically Suffering People “THE Platytera”, in the church of which is the tomb of the blessed Bishop, and he also performed trishagio there.
