BISHOP OF CORFU, MR. NEKTARIOS: THE HISTORY OF PERSECUTIONS AGAINST CHRISTIANS IS REPEATED

On the morning of Friday, December 4, 2020, His Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy at the church of Saint Vassilios in Corfu, which honors the miraculous icon and holy relic of Saint Barbara. The divine service was performed behind closed doors, due to the decision of the state to keep the churches closed to the people of God.

The divine liturgy was broadcast on the radio from the station of the Holy Metropolis “AGIOS SPYRIDON 91.1” and on the internet. Speaking to the listeners and spectators, the Metropolitan of Corfu stressed, among other things, the following: “Saint Barbara received from Christ a special gift to banish infectious diseases. That is why our people honor her, as well as other Saints in whom she sees protection from difficult circumstances.

Such a saint is the patron saint of Corfu, Agios Spyridon. The Saint received this grace from Christ precisely because she struggled in her life with her faith and love to bear witness to God, in an age ruled by pagans, atheists and unbelieving emperors, such as Diocletian. They were relentless persecutors of the faith, because they were disturbed by Christ and the Church. But the saints had a spirit of confession and deep faith and preferred martyrdom, rather than succumbing to atheistic accusations and giving up the power of faith.

That is why they remain the protectors of God’s people, every Christian who feels, especially in our times, that history repeats itself. Today we operate with a bloody heart in an empty temple. Police officers pass outside the church in case any believers appear to light their candle, to worship, to say their prayers after the service. They are the orders of modern power, which believes exclusively in rationality and science.

And while he sees that the modern invisible enemy remains omnipotent and afflicts the world, the modern rulers are not humbled, but turn their resentment against the Church. Instead of asking for the prayer of the people, their support and in this way, they considered and consider it right to close the temples. People tasteless of God’s grace, without spiritual experiences, think that they will humiliate and exhaust the Church, putting the minds of the faithful people under persecution. But our people will remain faithful. He will patiently and prayerfully maintain trust in God and His will. He will invoke the saints of our faith and will see the lailapa pass. As all persecutions in history have passed, so will the modern one pass. And Saint Barbara will strengthen those who hold the crown of love for God, which no one will be able to take from them!
