Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios: “Our nation has as its foundation and hope, Our Lady”.
On the morning of Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at the Ionian Academy an event was held to celebrate the National Anniversary of 28th October organized by the Ionian University.
Mr. Athanasios Efstathiou, president of the Department of History of the University, made a speech titled: “Greece and the Albanian Front. The unexpected allied victory. ”
In his greeting of the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, stressed the importance of faith in Christ and the Virgin Mary of the 1940s fighters. This faith strengthened the soldiers, of a poor army, against Italian fascists. As many fighters testify, they saw the Mother of God in the snowy mountain peaks of Pindos and repel the invaders. Our army not only did not retreat, but retaliated, freeing the North Epirus. These glorious pages of our history some try to eliminate from the history books of our schools in order for the younger generation not to be proud of its ancestors.
Mr. Nektarios also compared the era of the Second World War to the present, where our beloved homeland is narrowing under the occupation, this time of inhumane fiscal austerity policies and speculators, destroying entire peoples. For the sake of increasing their wealth, they are brutally indifferent to the lives of people.
Finally, the Eucharist expressed his strong belief that the foundation and hope of our Nation is the Lady Theotokos, the Exalted General.
