Bishop of Corfu, Mr. Nektarios “Life without God is meaningless” Press Team Send an email17/11/2019

On Sunday morning, November 17, 2019, his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios did the Divine Liturgy in  the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon in Livadi, Velonades.

In his address to the faithful, Mr. Nektarios, inspired from the gospel reading of the wealthy rich, emphasized that God does not discriminate in the donation of goods, as he also offers to the righteous and the unjust. The question is what is our prudence in managing goods. The enormous richness of the parable was characterized by spiritual myopia. He abandoned God and deified himself and his material possessions, so that he had no spiritual orientation in his life. The voice of God in His abundance shows that every human being is called to look up, to look to God. If we divine ourselves, then we commit ourselves to fellowship with God and fellow man and live the state of spiritual death.

So does modern human. They deceive themselves. They are interested in their  esteem and success, in the increase of material goods, in the secular projection, with the result that they are either alone or in conflict with his neighbor. When we think that “we are everything”, when we deify our rights, when we lack the view of God, we forget the neighbor, we become uncertain, and everything gives rise to disruption, disorder, lack of meaning.

We see this at the global level as well. The bounty of life without God leads peoples to pointless conflicts over who will have more. A characteristic sign of apathy is also the issue of migration, the move by powerful populations to move unintentionally and without preconditions, resulting in many problems.

An old man used to say to somebody, “He has knowledge, he has no knowledge!” Aplenty denotes the lack of awareness of what the meaning of life is. It denotes the absence of wisdom from above, the absence of the fear of God, the respect for God, and His commandments. The substitution of this wisdom for material goods is the utter prudence of man.

Mr Nektarios concluded by saying that it is time to rediscover the community in Christ, which is prudence, to give up our rights only and to become aware of God’s presence.
