BISHOP OF CORFU: ABOUT THE DEATH OF THE LATE BISHOP OF KASTORIA

“He hasn’t died, but he’s going.” This is what our soul and our faith in the will of God tell us! And yet the word continues in our hearts: “our friend the Bishop Seraphim is sleeping”. And the tears come to our face spontaneously, not because we do not trust our “lord of life and death” Lord, but because as humans we feel a painful deprivation. A man of God who lived and acted according to his faith left the militant Church. A devotee of Christ, the Saints, the Church, a deeply spiritual man, a tireless worker of the Gospel, dynamic and daring, a patriot, a defender of the rights of our Macedonia, faithful and firm in the Church, an ascetic, more a monk than a bishop.

Shepherd “knowing himself and being known by them”. Close to the joys and sorrows of his people. He made Kastoria his homeland, his home, he gave new life to a historical place, he loved the churches not only as monuments, but as places of worship of the living God, he renovated, preserved, built from scratch. Most of all, however, he cultivated souls. He became the father who gave birth to worthy children in Christ, dedicated to God and the Church. He claimed to have seen bishops from his flock as patriarchs “around his table”. It was given to the Church and that is why his premature departure from this world makes us suffer a lot.

We have been close friends since our youth. We served on the Synodal Committee on Lonely Life for twenty years. We worked together again and again. He was hosted by our Saint Spyridon, whom he loved dearly. He reciprocated the hospitality in his Diocese. We communicated constantly. He stood by us in our trials and we stood by his. Now he was in a hurry to start working on the heavenly altar. As he operated daily on earth, constantly becoming a communicant of the secret earthly Supper, he now becomes the forerunner of all who loved and were loved in the kingdom of Basel, in the new birth of the heavenly vine. May his memory be eternal. In the name of the Lord blessed.

Brother in Christ, brethren of the word and love, preacher, Bishop of Kastoria, lord of Upper Macedonia, Seraphim, resting in the Lord and wishing for us.
