This year, Corfu celebrated humbly but also gloriously the memory of the fellow islander of the island of Saint Theodora the Empress, whose holy relic is found in the Metropolitan Church of the Most Holy Theotokos Spilaiotissis.
On the morning of Thursday, February 11, 2021, the Matin and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy were performed by his Eminence the Bishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, who, according to the custom of the tradition, blessed Saint Vlasios, whose fragment of a sacred relic is found in the Holy Temple and whose memory is commemorated with Saint Theodora.
In his sermon, His Holiness pointed out that St. Theodora lived her life “redeemed by time”, according to the apostle Paul. He was a man of practice and prayer, a man of patience and he became an example for us. Saint Theodora lifted the cross of rejection by her own people, who led her to resign from the imperial throne. She herself accepted to become a nun and live to the end of her life praying.
Saint Theodora is a child of light and this urges us to live. Keep the light of faith dim and it teaches us to keep faith alive in the times. Modern man believes that progress has nothing to do with God. But this is a mistake. Sin leads man to believe that he can live without God, that he can with technology and the triumph of selfishness, as well as material wealth that we will live forever. The man with the outrageous speed believes that he will dominate the universe. But the universe belongs to God and we are a part of the universe. He who deifies his ego will be humbled. God created us and wants us his children. Selfishness pushes us out of the trajectory of faith and love.
Our times today are “wicked days.” But through the freedom of God, no one can deprive us of our faith, our love, our life for God. No one can deprive us of our soul and our inner world. If we understand the wickedness of the days, we will live communion again with God and fellow man. Let us be kept within the Church. Let us ask for the help of Saint Theodora, let us study her spiritual treasure that made her famous through holiness.
The events ended, as every year, with the prayer in honor of the Saint on the afternoon of the holy day.
