1.300.000 Euro donated for the Philanthropic Work of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu

A clerical gathering took place on Thursday afternoon, January 25, 2018 at the Amphitheatre of the Chronically Suffering People’s Foundation “The Platytera” in Corfu. During this gathering, the New Year’s Vassilopita (Greek Cake) was blessed and cut.

Also, the Protopresbyter father Themistoklis Mourtzanos, General Prelatic Warden of the Holy Metropolis presented the Economic Management Report of the Holy Metropolis of Corfu and its Foundations along with the one of the General Philoptochos Fund.

It should be noted that his Eminence, the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios is in Athens due to the meeting of the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. According to the numbers for the charity, social and missionary work, in 2017 around 1.300.000 euros were donated. This amount of money is a social offering of the Church to God’s people.

Father Themistoklis conveyed the paternal wished of the Bishop of Corfu, Paxoi and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios and then underlined the fact that philanthropy is like imitating Christ and is the answer to the challenges of our times as far as the usefulness of the Church is concerned.

Charity is a reason to motivate people outside the Church and it comes from the Liturgical Life. It embraces people as a whole and not only the material aspect of their lives. Otherwise charity becomes activism. Philanthropy is forgiveness, prayers, ministry of words, radio productions, publications, camps, catechism, shortly every work of study and education.

Moreover, father Themistoklis pointed out that giving food, especially in our times, is of great value, with parcels offered on a daily basis by the Social Supermarkets of the local Church. Above all, it is the indiscriminate love for all, the giving of the self and the offering to the other people.

Finally, father Themistoklis thanked the clergy and the people for their great contribution to the work of the Holy Metropolis, which is the Salvation and Ministry of humans.
